Like many people, I have become increasingly concerned about the effect that plastic, and single use plastic in particular, is having on the environment and wildlife as it finds its way into landfill and our oceans. We have seen heartbreaking images on our TVs of suffering wildlife which has raised questions in the public consciousness about our commitment to protecting and preserving our planet for future generations.
During the past couple of years I have been trying to cut down on the single use plastic that comes into our house but its not easy! Sometimes it has been difficult to find produce and products I need without packaging or containing plastic which led me to the idea of a packaging free shop in my local area of west Wirral to help others trying to do the same.
A zero waste shop has other benefits too. It can cut down on food waste as you only fill your bag or reusable container with exactly the amount you need. It can also help you eat more healthy ingredients as we sell organic and fairtrade produce and animal friendly and sustainably and locally sourced products.
I’m aware that zero waste can sound very black and white ( I’m sure you’ve seen images of the Millennials who have managed to reduce their waste for the year to fit in a jam jar!) but I think its more about doing our bit, whatever that may be. None of us will ever be 100% sustainable but there are lots of things we can do. Our actions and choices have an impact and hopefully The Hoylake Pantry will help make that a positive one. It’s not about perfection; it’s about making better choices.
